| 10:40 pm | Ubuntu 9.10 dvd It can play dvd with the preinstalled Totem media player, or easily downloadable Videolan VLC player (or many others). However, for legal reasons, they cannot preinstall css descrambling codecs, which have to be downloaded and installed by the user. Should be easy enough, though. Update. | 3:23 am | Ubuntu 9.10 wireless Yesterday I installed Ubuntu 9.10 on my HP Pavilion tx 2100 laptop (I am not sure the model series is correct, something like that). Everything went smooth except that it would not see WiFi wireless networks. It did, however, recognize my wireless EVDO card out of the box. A quick search resulted in a quick fix. I just wanted to mention the proper links here. This worked for me: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.p sudo apt-get install bcmwl-kernel-source worked fine. I had to reboot so the OS would recognize the driver, that's all.This is the link that pointed me to the right place: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.p lshw -C network etc).Just wanted to share in case more people have trouble. |

| 2:37 am | America still a "goldene medine" An article in Economist about immigration in the US. And the very first comment, about Kerala, rings the bell for many of us, I think. I do agree with some of the comments (there as well as in Hacker News) that a comparison of the US with other "immigrant" countries such as Canada and Australia (and New Zealand; what else? Israel is very specific) could be instructive. But it would require a separate article, I guess. As a side note, the two discussions of this article (one, two) in Hacker News that I saw were of a lower quality than I have come to expect from HN. Maybe it is because the topic is not one where most of the HN readership has professional expertise. Or maybe it is the timing of the holidays. Also, the title is unfortunate (The Ponzi scheme that works). I guess the only place where it could fit the definition of a Ponzi scheme is family-based immigration, where one immigrant can bring in more immigrants from the immediate family, but this typically stops after one iteration. |

Раз Россия не угрожает непосредственно США и UK, то может внутри себя делать, что хочет. А когда где-то появляется какой-нибудь Саддам, и управляющие начинают копошиться, народ выходит на улицы: мол, руки прочь от Ирака! Но Россия не Ирак, не угрожает. | 5:40 pm | iremember Война хуйня, главное манёвры: отступать медленно нельзя - попадешь в лапы к немцам, но и быстро тоже нельзя - попадешь под "родной" трибунал, поэтому приходилось день ехать, а день стоять Вот тоже неплохо: Вскоре меня вызывают в военкомат и говорят: "Мы вас переводим на другую работу". Я задумалась, куда же меня на другую работу будут отправлять, и притом по линии военкомата, я же работала в связи. В итоге направили меня в сельсовет нашего же района, меня туда мама отвезла, там уже люди собирались, из других районов и поселков, выстроили нас всех в ряд, вышел начальник, и начал агитировать нас, доклад делать. Только тогда до меня дошло, что я в армию попала, а не куда-то еще переводят на другую работу. |
