Every time I am driving a car or riding a bicycle, there is a squirrel jumping under the wheels. Or when a squirrel wants to cross a road and sees an approaching car, it freezes for a sec, then starts hopping about. Stupid!
Rats are much smarter. When I was in the army, we had a large round bowl (about 10 feet across) dug in the ground up to a foot or two from the rim. We used the bowl to mix food for our pigs (more about this later), so by the end of the day there were always little chunks of edible stuff down there which the rats would finish off. One day we decided to catch a few rats, so we poured some water in the bowl, a couple of feet deep. In an hour, I saw a rat jump in the bowl with a huge splash! It was looking wet and sorry, and I felt for it. But what happened next really lifted my spirits. The rat swam about the bowl and ate a few pieces of bread and such. Then it swam towards the wall of the bowl, and rather than trying to go straight at the "shore", it went along the wall, all the time picking up speed. Gradually it was fast enough to climb up the wall, and in five seconds it was out of the bowl and gone!
